Battles of life have their basis from the mind. Sadly, most Christians do not realize this truth. Every war on earth has its origin in the mind. Some thoughts must have influenced the war.
When we say spiritual battle, most Christians don’t know what this battle truly is, let alone how it should be fought. It is a common knowledge that spiritual battle is an inevitable part of spiritual life. However, it’s always difficult to even point out specifically what the spiritual life really is. Therefore, spiritual battle in the church has been an ambiguous subject.
Nonetheless, the common believe is that the only way to fight spiritual battle is simply through prayer and the study of the Bible. One of the most important things to know in spiritual battle is the knowledge of what we protect and save through the battle. This knowledge is necessary for a victorious spiritual battle. Fighting without the knowledge of what you are fighting for leaves you defeated naturally.
The battles most Christians actually fight through prayers are not spiritual but physical battles. They pray to save and protect only what they can see and feel. We pray for healing, deliverance and the likes as spiritual battle. What we don’t realize, is the fact that all of these and such are just the consequences of spiritual battle. These are simply the effect of a real spiritual battle and not the battle itself. Sickness, demonic influence, possession, anxiety etc. are simply signs that one has been overtaken by Satan already.
The underlying reason for spiritual battle is that, God has made life free and good for man so that man can worship God out of unimaginable joy and freedom.
This is the basic teaching of the Bible, the Old Testament reveals this at the creation. However, this was marred by sin in the beginning but God out of grace has worked out the restoration of man to the original state.
The New Testament reveals the work of the restoration of man to this original state by Jesus Christ and the proclamation of this potential restoration by the apostle. God’s desire for man is life abundance, life of joy and peace (Gen.1:27-31, Jer. 29:11-13, John 10:10, 16:23-24, 1Thess. 5:16-18, James 1:16-17).
The battle then is that the enemy want to cheat and deny man these things and God’s glory ultimately.
The theology that Christians are made to simply suffer is erroneous. What the Bible rather teaches is that, so long we are living on earth, we must suffer because the earth is a battleground but this is not to say that it is God’s will that man should suffer.
So we are not to choose and accept suffering or death as God’s will. Rather the scriptures encourage us to be comforted and be joyful when trials come, as it is only a matter of time, based on the faith we have in the finished work of Christ and the victory thereupon (John 16:33, Rom.5:3-5, 8:37, James 1:2-4).
Basically, spiritual battle is a battle of the mind! The scripture says: For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he ( Prov. 23:7a). The target of Satan first and foremost is not to simply afflict your flesh with disease or cause you to be poor but to make you believe and think all of such evil. If he can convince you to believe in these things then he has succeeded because as a man thinks so is he, as you think so you are.
If he can change the way you think, the pattern of your thought will automatically replicate itself in your entire life. For example, if he can make you believe in sickness or in poverty you will automatically think sickness and poverty and you will eventually act and live like it.
Life is simply a conformation and a reflection of what you believe; your system of believe and what you think. In other words, you are what you believe and think. And what you believe or think is controlled either by God or by Satan because these are the only spiritual forces that exist.
The life you live is simply a result of the spiritual force you choose to yield to in your heart. So the questions are; who controls you mind? What do you think and how do you think? If Satan controls your mind, he has you but if God does he has you as well.
God has given man His Word (the Bible) so that through it he will be guided from the mind by God’s will (Romans 12:2). And the scriptures reveal who God is, His love for the lost humanity through His promises. Human obedience to God’s Word that results to the fulfilment of God’s Word in our lives is what Satan is vehemently against. He will not just allow us obey and be established on God’s Word.
Apostle Paul says:
We are humans, but we don’t wage war as humans do. We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:3-5).
There is nothing as neutral position in this, it is either you are control by God or Satan. The scripture says: above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it (Prov. 4:23 NIV). We have the responsibility of safe guarding our hearts. Our hearts are the centre of our lives; life or death flows from it.
I once live in the ignorance believing that I am helpless in regard to what I think or not. I thought that I have no power to control what I think or not, I believed that what we think flows naturally in our minds.
However, one day, I got to realise that I am subject to no one but my choices and decisions”. God cannot make me His subject neither can Satan. I am a subject to whoever I am because I choose to. I am a subject to anything I am because I choose to. That is why on the last day everyone will only be accountable for himself or herself, no one will blame anyone.
The fundamental role of man in the spiritual realm is choices and decisions. Through his choices and decisions he changes the spiritual course of his life and his environment. Our Choices and decisions work with faith in the spiritual realm. We choose what we believe and believe what we choose.
Human beings can force their fellow into obeying or serving them but that is not true submission true submission comes from personal choice and will.
There is a battle that goes on in your mind 24/7. Physical battle is simply an eruption of spiritual battle. For instance, every meaningful step we take in live must go through a period of contemplation before we could finally decide on what to do.
In the beginning life had no moral option the only choice there was, was goodness. Everything man does was good because there was no evil. The birth of sin create room for choice; the choice of good or evil.
The planting of decision in the mind of man is the ground of spiritual battle. God wants to use our decisions to influence the earth and Satan equally wants to use our decisions to work on earth. Our choices either to let God influence our decisions or Satan is what make the difference.
The sensitivity to the influence of the two forces (God and Satan) is very necessary for victory in spiritual battle.
